Google Plus 1 – Let’s Get Sociable

So … Google plus 1 has been in existence for a little over a week and already the virtual world responds with what can only be described as wild (and sycophantic) abandon. Providing that your name’s Mark Zuckerberg. Once again, the founder of Facebook, the creator of social networking sites bar none is kicking ass in the Mr. Popular stakes.

Pass me the sick bucket. I mean – come on guys, the man already enjoys the kind of luck, fame and fortune that most of us would never achieve with nine lives, let alone the one and only that we’re currently experiencing. Go make someone more deserving the most liked, the most favored … you know, someone that really deserves to be rated into the stratosphere for doing something really impressive.

Like beating cancer. Sacrificing something precious in order to make the world just that little bit safer. Changing lives, that kind of thing. But the guy that delivered the world’s biggest tool of ultimate distraction? Please. I love Facebook, I use Facebook. I also appreciate the work and dedication that went into its creation. I’m a nerd, of course I get it. But why (oh why) is Mark Zuckerberg the one that gets all the votes?

And the irony? Google Plus is all about social networking. It’s Google’s attempt to get in on the Facebook act.  And it’s working. So far the masses have bought the hype and the plus 1 (or is it +1, plus one?) is now entering full throttle mode. Especially for the likes of Mark Zuckerberg. Oddly, most (that I’m aware of) don’t fully understand the power of social networking online, and the plus 1 button is no exception.

What Is Google Plus 1

Basically, Google plus 1 enables you (the user) to share your ‘likes’ with any number of contacts, both intended and accidental. You create a profile (I’m saying this like you should, otherwise the whole ‘social networking’ aspect is moot), which involves offering a little bit (or a lot – there’s room for showboats and show-offs) about who you are, what you do etc.

Upload a photo, either a real one or an avatar, add videos, contact info and then add contacts. This part’s easy enough, you just need to find folks you know (or don’t) and away you go – network. Socially.

That’s it. It’s nothing new or unusual; it’s certainly not groundbreaking. Facebook have been doing this (and quite well I might add) for the last few years. Still, all you have to do, whilst moving around the internet, is click the little plus 1 icon that’s placed to the upper right of every web link that turns up on Google search … supposing that you like what the web site or page offers.

Of course you can also join in with all the toadying Mark Zuckerberg window lickers and go click his plus one button. I guess one more obsequious (big word, go look it up) fan won’t unbalance the fawn-fest. And, for those that may be wondering, it also works with a variety of browsers; Google Crome, Firefox, Opera et al.

Final word? Click on the last two words if you’re a window licker.

lol ;-)
